On discontinuing dialysis.

چکیده

Ethical issues relating to the withdrawal of dialysis are discussed, comparing dialysis with other life-support systems, particularly artificial ventilation. It is argued that there is no ethical difference between discontinuing treatment in each case. One practical difference between the two is that patients with chronic renal failure are less likely to have reduced autonomy, and so can engage in discussions with their doctors regarding the situations in which their life-supporting treatment might be discontinued. It is argued that doctors caring for patients on dialysis have an ethical duty to discuss with these patients the circumstances in which they may wish to discontinue dialysis.

Ceftriaxone-Induced Acute Encephalopathy in a Peritoneal Dialysis Patient

Encephalopathy is a rare side effect of third and fourth generation cephalosporins. Renal failure and preexisting neurological disease are notable risk factors. Recognition is important as discontinuing the offending agent usually resolves symptoms. We present a case of acute encephalopathy in a patient with end stage renal disease (ESRD) treated with peritoneal dialysis (PD) who received intra...

Time course of extracellular dopamine and behavioral sensitization to cocaine. II. Dopamine perikarya.

Cocaine was administered daily (15 mg/kg, i.p. x 1 d followed by 30 mg/kg, i.p. x 5 d) to produce behavioral sensitization. Using microdialysis in the ventral tegmental area and medial substantia nigra, the effect of repeated cocaine was examined on the extracellular levels of dopamine. One day after discontinuing repeated cocaine injections, an acute challenge with cocaine (15 mg/kg, i.p.) pro...
